Lion Barry Miller
I was born in South London just after the war, a ‘Baby Boomer’ so they say. My parents decided to move out of London when I was six, so to Essex we came. My memories of London have faded now but if asked I often refer to myself as a Londoner.
My school years were uneventful, I stayed on and achieved a fistful of GCE’s (remember them) I also started to play the drums in the school rock band and have played with many different types of bands over the years, I continue today in our club band: Rewired.
When I left school I embarked on a career as a toolmaker, starting with an apprenticeship in a small engineering company. I suppose it’s fair to say this is where it all started, there I met my wife Jean, also learnt the basics of engineering practice, which I have used throughout my life in many ways. The owner of the business was Mel Payne; those that don’t know can look into the history of District 105 EA, and see he was our first District Governor in 1979.
After five years at the end of my apprenticeship I left and joined the Marconi Company in order to gain more experience. It was always good practice to leave the company where you ‘served your time’ and go out into the big wide world. There was another reason, I was now engaged to the boss’s secretary and we didn’t think working together was a good idea. Jean and I married in 1969 and we have two daughters and one grandson.
In 1977 Basildon Lions decided to extend into South Benfleet and the Lions Club of Castle Point was formed. Lion Mel Payne was one of the two extension officers and my mentor. As Jean still worked for him he asked me to become a member.
I became the Charter Secretary of the new club in the same year.
I served 28 years at Marconi which eventually became part of British Aerospace becoming Head of Mechanical Inspection and a company signatory for release of air frame and mechanical equipment. In 1996 a series of circumstances made me decide to change path and move to a smaller company (Musto Ltd) working on Quality and Facilities Management. Jean and I retired from Musto in 2007.
Being a member of Castle Point and Lions International for almost 34 years has moulded my life and I will never forget the friends I have made over the years.
I have done the majority of club jobs and served district at many levels and am looking forward to my year as DG of EA. Remember my motto:
PLAY TOGETHER SERVE TOGETHER.
