Past International Director Phil Nathan

International 2nd Vice President Campaign

PID Phil Nathan selected to represent Lions Clubs International at the
Global Volunteer Conference.

Lions Clubs International has been invited to participate in the Global Volunteer Conference. The Conference, which is being organized by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme takes place in Budapest from 15-17 September 2011.

The Conference marks the tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers and coincides with the European Year of Volunteering.

The conference theme will be ―Volunteering for a Sustainable Future, and will look at ways to mainstream volunteerism in peace, humanitarian and development work.

Given Lions involvement in the area of disaster relief and preparedness, we have been approached to share our experience and lessons learned related to volunteer emergency assistance and recovery efforts.

The Global Volunteer Conference will bring together high level leadership and decision makers from humanitarian and development organizations, governments, civil society, academia, the UN system and the corporate sector.

Lions have been asked to participate in the Day 2 plenary panel and roundtable discussions, which will focus on volunteering in crisis prevention and recovery.  For the plenary panel,  speakers have been selected who can not only contribute to discussions on how civil society/volunteer organizations can better prepare/manage volunteers in emergency situations (be it post natural disaster or civil conflict), but also help to develop/advocate policy recommendations to create a more enabling environment for volunteers.

Given his vast experience in assisting children and communities in post-civil conflict areas and his knowledge of Lions Clubs International, PID Phil Nathan has been selected, on behalf of LCI to participate as a panelist speaker to share Lions’ perspective on volunteerism following emergencies.

International President Dr Wing-Kun Tam is ‘delighted to have PID Phil represent LCI at the conference’.
